How does the 10 to 4 GPA conversion work?

Indian universities typically grade on a 10-point scale (CPI/CGPA), while US and many international universities use a 4-point GPA scale. When you apply abroad — for MS, MBA, or PhD programs — you are often asked to report your scores on the 4-point scale.

This tool converts using the standard linear formula: divide your 10-point score by 10 and multiply by 4. So a CPI of 8.5 becomes a GPA of 3.4, and a GPA of 3.0 converts back to a CPI of 7.5.

⚠️ Important: this is a widely-used estimate, not an official conversion. Universities, WES, and credential evaluators each use their own grade-mapping tables. Always check what your target institution expects before submitting official documents.
? Frequently Asked Questions
What is the formula to convert 10-point CPI to 4-point GPA? +
GPA = (CPI ÷ 10) × 4. For example, a CPI of 8.5 gives (8.5 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.4 GPA. To convert back: CPI = (GPA ÷ 4) × 10.
Is this conversion officially accepted by universities? +
Not universally. It is the most common linear estimate students use, but universities and evaluators like WES apply their own official grade-conversion tables. Treat this as a quick estimate and confirm with your target institution.
What GPA is an 8.5 or 9.0 CPI? +
An 8.5 CPI converts to a 3.4 GPA, and a 9.0 CPI converts to a 3.6 GPA on the 4-point scale. Check the reference table above for more values.
Can I convert my 4-point GPA back to the 10-point scale? +
Yes — switch to the "4-point → 10-point" tab. A 3.5 GPA becomes (3.5 ÷ 4) × 10 = 8.75 CPI.
Is this tool free? +
